Saying goodbye to Foursquare

It looks like we had about a 5 year run Foursquare and I, and I had frequently questioned why I went to the effort of checking in, but I did like my mayorships and losing my mayorships while I was on vacation only to eventually earn them back when I returned and fell back into my old habits.

That is no more. With the update and change to Foursquare, I can no longer regain the mayorships that were meaningful to me.  Well, I guess I could go over to their new app Swarm and become a mayor among my “friends” but I really don’t want to collect Foursquare friends, I want to be the fucking mayor of my damn vegan restaurant.

At one time it really did work for me, I remember being in Portland, wondering where that little breakfast place I went to was and finding it… actually finding it again.  I remember surprise mayorships that I think I hold to this day because I was the dude who cared enough to check in. But I also remember the day the app just died, when my checkins stopped counting and I could not regain a mayorship I had held for months or years because I was stupid enough to go on vacation before the surprise update to the way the game I had been playing took place.

So this is as much a grave marker as a lament, I don’t know that I will or will not go back but I am acknowledging a loss here.  I feel like if I had just been more monitizable… I could still be playing, but I knew all along that it was hallow.

So from my very first checkin:

And the few I thought might have made me cool:Screen Shot 2014-07-14 at 21.19.01To my ultimate consistency:Screen Shot 2014-07-14 at 21.27.23Even when I didn’t know what I was doing:Screen Shot 2014-07-14 at 21.25.40To the places I have been and brought the game:Screen Shot 2014-07-14 at 21.14.17I reflect on the fact that I played thru this for most of my time on wifi exclusively because I was using my iPod or because I had no data plan (in Russia) and am pretty amaze that it was so sticky.

This is the challenge of the network app, and the world we live in, the “game” lives on and my data will continue to be monitized, but I am done contributing.

New Software and New Projects

In an attempt to become more organized I have recently downloaded some software. So here are a few comments in no particular order:

cocoalicious – I have struggled with delicious for a long time, it has become a bit of a golden hole for me. That sounds odd and perhaps a little dirty too. But I realized that I put a lot of great links into it, but every time, almost without fail, when I went to find something that I knew was there I could not. Worse than that I could not figure out how it was searching and how I kept coming up with suggestions of other peoples links instead of mine. I have literally five and a half years worth of bookmarks and though I do realize I have probably hit the expiration date on many of them, this app does one which is pretty awesome. It allows spotlight to find the individual bookmarks as well. Huzzah! I actually found an old book mark looking for something on my computer. This free app that uses the delicious api has connected me to the other end of delicious and I am finding those things I stored away so long ago.

MacJournal – writing is always a struggle and distraction and eye strain from staring at a light bulb for hours on end has not helped at all. Ali had turned me on to something that was sort of cool but the 30 day trial ran out before I got back to it. This all makes me wonder why didn’t they do a certain number of uses? No matter, MacHeist Nano or Pedo or whatever to the rescue. I grabbed MacJournal because of the outrageous claims that it made and frankly I am pretty damn impressed. I am struggling to dial in the connection to Open Office and Google docs but it is really pretty darn comfortable to work in (and I am now blogging in : – )

Oh and it will post to my blog automagically, so I am in business.

Free Software – I found the first piece of software on though I do not recall what it was that I was looking for originally, I am totally impressed with the list and will be picking through it in more detail shortly. What I need now is a good budgeting and financial tracking system.

Google Forms – I have managed to do some good work in the cloud with surveys and google forms, but it always felt like it was missing something. I plan to do expense tracking that I can then manipulate a bit here. I have a couple of checking in forms that seem to work at least as well as foursquare is working for me on the web.

Buzz Turned Off, For Now

I poked a while at Google Buzz and have finally gotten around to disabling it. You may wonder why and be asking: “Rube you are a social media guy, don’t you publish everything anyhow? What are you afraid of?”

Well, I am not afraid of anything and only have a few minor criticisms of the service which undoubtably will be eventually ironed out.  The problem I am having is with gmail.  I have had a gmail account for years, and am currently using 55% of 7.5 GB on my original account, I also have 6 years worth of archived emails in this space which I have used for that specific purpose — to keep a record of my emails. This is also my backup account, and I have run a few years worth of google docs out of it as well.

The problem is that I NEVER check this email, nor do I intend to start, on occasion it will fall into a cc list and I will miss an important note, but this is rare.

Buzz has started connecting my friends to it, and I can see the problem starting up.  I have been lazy in migrating my stuff over to my current gmail that forwards to my domain,  and am not excited about having to do this just yet.

Also the one domain that I would want it on, my hosted email with gmail, buzz is not available yet.

THAT is why. I check email on mail, and do chat through iChat, and twitter on seesmic.

I may be migrating over the information and activate my main gmail with buzz, but it will take some effort on my part.
